 This isn’t your ordinary furniture shop. If you listen closely, you might hear an echo from the past: tons of grain pouring out of the ceiling where chutes still exist, or the clanking of old-fashioned machinery milling grain into powdery flour. Though Archibald Gardner’s turn-of-the-century flour mill hasn’t existed for centuries, you can still see signs of it by exploring this furniture store built in the reclaimed 1877 mill. Walk across creaky wooden floors past the original pulleys, wheels and a cool-looking flour sifter still intact. Atop the sifter sits braided rugs, gifts and wicker baskets. The ceiling is made-up of rough wooden beams and three flights of simple-hewn stairs run up and down the shop.
Look through a window to see a waterwheel lugging water outside. Peruse through three floors of a lofty barn-like space filled with down-home furniture: punched-tin pie safes, distressed wooden bureaus, rocking chairs and other furniture. Select from patchwork pillows, framed cross-stitches, black felt quilts with colorful folk-art designs, candles that smell like baked goods and traditional braided rugs from the Capel Rug Gallery.
